Any electrical accessories you would like to put in a bathroom must comply to the wiring regulations.

Bathrooms are segmented into zones, each zone being determined by it’s proximity to the bath, shower, sink, toilet and any other water source.

The wiring regulations only permit certain electrical components to be positioned within certain zones, meaning shaver sockets / lights, recessed down lights, extractor fans, LED panel lights, music speakers etc. must be suitable for that zone.

When you purchase a bathroom accessory the packaging will normally advise you what zone that item can be fitted in, either by actually stating it, or by specifying an IP rating (the IP number equates to a zone).

Please note that any modification to the electrical supply in a bathroom must be RCD protected.

Please read the Extensions & Conservatories section of this site as the notes relating to extending circuits are also relevant to bathrooms.
